You can learn a lot about a Troop by asking the scouts what they do. You
can also learn a lot by asking the Scoutmaster what he does. Here’s
some words from our Scoutmaster, Tom D.,
“I convinced Scouts to experience
German from Russia pioneering first hand by having them
spend a night in a sod house, listen to pioneering stories, and eat German
delicacies. They tell me they loved it. So did the adults who attended. (The
adults, however, slept outside in tents).” I also convinced the Scouts
it might be fun to walk across a raging river with a 30 pound load on their
backs, then climb straight up Buttes, march through a herd of 10,000 bison,
walk through a prairie dog town, tour a meadow of beautiful wild flowers, and
walk carefully through a rattle snake den. The goal was to see what is left
of trees that have been dead for thousands of years (a petrified forest).
They tell me they loved the goal and they loved the journey.
O.K. so the river was only six inches
deep and there were only a few bison a hundred yards away and there was only
one rattle snake that a few Scouts and one adult saw. It was a spectacular
event”
